A visit to the Royal British Legion in Surrey
In July at the Provincial Priory of Surrey Annual Meeting in Croydon the Provincial Prior, RE.Kt. Patrick P Crossan, was pleased to announce our support for the Royal British Legion with a donation for their Surrey Branch. Kt. Graham McGlashen received the cheque at the Annual Meeting on behalf of the Royal British Legion.

Kt. Graham arranged a date for a few of us to visit their offices in Leatherhead to meet with the team and to present the £350 to their Community Fundraiser, Peter Wakeham. Present were our Provincial Prior, RE.Kt. Patrick Crossan, Kt. Ken Chandler and Roy Miller, a well known Mason and a WW2 War Veteran.

We were also joined by Ron Pearce, County Treasurer, another WW2 veteran who at 100 years of age said that Roy Miller at 94 was only a boy.

We were then taken on a tour of their operations at Leatherhead and met some of the team working there.

While there we borrowed a Silent Soldier to display at the Festive Board at our Provincial Malta meeting. The Silent Solider campaign honours the British troops who fought and died in the First World War 100 years ago.

Near life-size silhouettes of a First World War ‘Tommy’ are being fixed on buildings, gardens, fields, and roundabouts across the country, in remembrance of those in the armed forces who came home ‘silently’ from the war, as well as those who never made it home.

We then drove to Pat Crossan’s house for coffee and cake before returning home.

Many thanks to our cabbie, Kt. Graham McGlashen, for driving Roy, myself and the Silent Soldier around in his black cab.

We were a bit shocked however at the fare for the journey.

When we questioned the amount he said he had to go ‘south of the river’ and I think he also left the meter running while we were presenting the cheque.
